With last summer’s record power production, spot shortages, and high selling prices, a one day
summer outage to plug leaking tubes could result in significant financial impact on the bottom
line. Allowing a unit to operate a day or two with the leaking tubes could result in damages
exceeding over a million dollars. Additionally, lost megawatts due to exchanger and turbine
inefficiency will cause a dramatic loss of income. This paper summarizes some of the possible
damage mechanisms, prevention tools, and payback justifications for making the preparatory
changes before the problem hits!
